Don’t expect too much charity in this derby

The “friendly” derby: Rhyan Grant with Bulls captain Luke Brattan helping promote the game this week.

When Macarthur FC and Sydney FC run on to the field at Campbelltown Stadium tomorrow night, they will ostensibly be playing for the Charity Cup to raise funds for the Sony Foundation.

It certainly is a great cause and the kind of initiative that can only be commended.

The Bulls will be wearing special pink jerseys, which is also a nice touch.

Of course the reality is that once the referee blows the whistle there will be very little charity between two teams desperate for premiership points.

In previous years, the Bulls wasted brilliant starts by going off the boil at the pointy end of the home and away season.

It hasn’t been that bad in 2025, yet, but points have been hard to come by in the past few rounds for the Bulls, who were inside the top four on the ladder for most of the season before that.

The opposite is true of their opponents, who started slowly but have come alive in the last few rounds.

Sydney FC are now in seventh spot, one point clear of Macarthur FC, who are eighth.

Both have played 18 matches, with Sydney having scored more goals than the Bulls, but also conceded more.

Based on those stats, this Round 21 clash is bound to be an entertaining one with plenty of goals.

Obviously, Macarthur FC need to win just to overtake Sydney on the ladder – and then just keep winning.

There are seven more rounds to go after this one, with the Bulls heading to Melbourne to face City next week, and Adelaide the week after that in what looks like a tough road trip for Mile Sterjovski’s team.

They are back home for Round 24 when they will host the Newcastle Jets on March 28, before hitting the road again to go north for a clash with Brisbane.

Bulls have a bye in Round 26, will be away to Mariners in Round 27 and finish the season with a home game against Melbourne Victory on April 25.
