It seems some readers on our Facebook page misunderstood our call last night for Campbelltown and other local councils to celebrate local success stories.
Our post referred to a civic reception for School of Rock Macarthur (pictured above), which had won a major international award.
The inference from one of the responses to that post was that councils would be inundated with requests for civic receptions rom every Tom, Dick and Harry if it devised a policy of celebrating achievements of locals and local organisations.
That would be true if a civic receptions policy was devised that set the bar too low.
As you will see below, the South West Voice has put together a list of Top 5 achievements that councils could celebrate with the community. We’re sure readers can add to that list.
This is not a formal submission, just an idea of what an upscaled civic receptions policy may look like.
The important point though is that such celebrations must be brought back into the life of our community, and who else should show leadership in this space but our councils.
As a ratepayer, too, we would have no objection to spending a few of our rates revenue on such a worthwhile exercise.
Celebrating winners is such an inspirational thing to do; once upon a time it was vital part of council activities in the community.
So here goes our Top 5 successes that could be celebrated in this way:
Number 1. Local residents who receive an Order of Australia honour.
Number 2. Local artists who win a big art prize, such as the Archibald.
Number 3. Winning the NRL premiership. This could be a parade down the main street for the Wests Tigers.
Number 4. A parade would also be in order if our football club, Macarthur FC Bulls, won the A-League premiership.
Number 5. Olympic gold medal winners.
