The fish had no chance: there was a big turnout for the annual catch a carp competition at Eagle Vale pond last Sunday.

If the carp in Eagle Vale pond could speak I’m sure they would have said: we have no chance today boys and girls, we are completely surrounded.

Indeed they were and 67 of the critters were permanently evicted from the large pond when the council organised fifth annual Catch a Carp competition was held there last Sunday.

With more than 500 registered participants, there were humans finishing from every vantage point right around the pond all day.

The fish, big or small, didn’t have a chance.

Out of the 67 carp caught, the largest was 59cm, while the smallest was 14cm.

Being a competition aimed at reducing the carp numbers, there were also winners among the humans, and the mayor of Campbelltown, George Brticevic, was on hand during the day to hand out the trophies for the champion anglers.

And the winners were:

• Most fish caught

Under 10 years: Kiera Lakeman and Chloe Emslie (two fish)

10-17 years: Jordan Cuevas (two fish)

18+ years: Tibi Languly (15 fish)

• Largest fish caught

Under 10 years: Lain Flatman and Chloe Emslie (26cm)

10-17 years: Gabriel Correa (46cm)

18+ years: Steven Dougherty (59cm)

• Overall: Steven Dougherty (59cm)

• Smallest fish caught: Graeme Ashfield (14cm)

• Mystery length: Keith Malone (31cm).
