In a coup for south west Sydney, renowned curator Hicham Khalidi will present Against the Image at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre this Saturday.

Khalidi’s presentation will be his first ever in Australia.

Casula Powerhouse is hosting Khalidi in partnership with Queensland Art Gallery-Gallery of Modern Art through Australia Council for the Arts funding support.

Khalidi’s presentation of Against the Image will start at 1pm and will be followed by a question and answer session.

Hicham Khalidi is a Dutch-Moroccan curator of contemporary art.

Currently the curator of exhibitions and the Artefact Festival at STUK Kunstencentrum in Leuven, Belgium, Khalidi’s projects as a curator include major exhibitions across Europe as well as the 4th and 5th Marrakech Biennale.

Against the Image is a talk that explores Aniconism, the prohibition of representation of the divine in Islam and its relationship to modern and contemporary Western art.

Casula Powerhouse director, Kiersten Fishburn, encourages the arts community to attend Saturday’s talk by Khalidi.

“This presentation and Q&A is a significant opportunity for all to engage with an important international curator presenting on a critically engaging and important topic,” Kiersten said.

The event was also welcomed by the mayor of Liverpool, Ned Mannoun, who said: “It is pleasing to see the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre host such a high calibre curator and being so involved in global arts reinforces the art centre’s position as the cultural capital of the great south west.’’
