Campbelltown Hospital hosted an emergency medicine conference last week.

Strengthening its position as a leader in training and education, Campbelltown Hospital last week brought together doctors from across the state for an Emergency Medicine Teaching Symposium.

The two-day conference was held especially for Career Medical Officers (CMOs) – doctors who have not chosen to specialise in a specific area of medicine, but often work throughout the hospital.

Dr Alan Giles, Hospital Skills Director SWSLHD, said the Symposium was organised for CMOs to share information and be updated on the latest in emergency medicine.

“Days like this are important so that our doctors are up to date with the latest research and clinical practice in emergency medicine,” Dr Giles said.

“All doctors who work in the Emergency Department need to be up to date with current practice as they often have to make quick decisions in a high pressure environment.

“The Emergency Department is a tough but very rewarding place to work and we hope that training days such as these help strengthen our CMOs’ skills,” he said.

Dr Giles said the symposium was also a great opportunity to showcase the talented staff and state of the art equipment at Campbelltown Hospital.

“The symposium allowed us to demonstrate the high level of emergency medicine clinical and teaching skills our staff have. Our teaching program at Campbelltown is among the best in the state,” he said.

The first day of the symposium showcased presentations and workshops on a wide range of topics.

These include basic cardiac bedside ultrasound, trends in trauma management, complaint management and a live recording of the EMcast podcast.

The second day focused on using the state of the art 3G simulation manikin at Campbelltown Hospital’s Simulation Centre to tackle complex patient cases in a safe team environment.

“The conference was a great success, with more than 40 CMOs attending from hospitals across NSW,” Dr Giles said.

The conference was run in conjunction with SWSLHD Emergency Medicine Certificate and Diploma Program Director, Dr Sanj Fernando.
