Children across South Western Sydney will receive a greater range of surgical, medical and outpatient services as part of the $632 million stage two Campbelltown Hospital redevelopment.
South Western Sydney Local Health District has been planning for the future development of services at the Campbelltown Hospital, which already provides paediatric surgery, including ear nose and throat, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and general surgery, to the community.
The further enhancement of paediatric surgery is included in one of the largest health infrastructure projects in the state, while the hospital’s new paediatrics precinct will also include close observation beds for more seriously ill children so they can be cared for closer to home.
A spokesperson for Campbelltown Hospital said other enhancements for children in the redevelopment include a new Paediatric Allied Health outpatient clinic with specialist therapy teams to treat children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy or developmental delays, and a new special care nursery.
“Campbelltown Hospital will continue to work collaboratively with the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network for the very small cohort (less than one per cent) of critically ill children requiring highly specialised intensive care,’’ the spokesperson said.
“Children requiring brain scans and some cancer treatments, as well as cardiology services, receive them at the hospital, reducing the need for transfer.’’
As part of a record $10.8 billion investment in health infrastructure across the state to 2024- 25, the redevelopment of Campbelltown Hospital will deliver a new clinical services building, set to be operational in mid-2022, along with a range of refurbishment and expansion works.
Key features of the hospital’s redevelopment include:
• New clinical services building with modern wards and patient facilities;
• New women’s health services including birthing suites and maternity ward;
• State-of-the-art operating theatres and intensive care unit;
• A larger emergency department with more treatment spaces;
• Modern mental health units centrally located;
• Increased access to outpatient and ambulatory care services;
• Upgraded medical imaging facilities and equipment;
• New health services include nuclear medicine and dental services.
The 2021-22 budget for South Western Sydney Local Health District is more than $2.15 billion, an increase of nearly $93 million, or 4.5 per cent more, on the previous year’s budget.
