Construction has now started on a new 508 space, five-storey multideck commuter car park at Campbelltown Station.
Federal infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government minister Catherine King today turned the first sod on the project today alongside Campbelltown Mayor George Greiss and Federal Member for Macarthur Dr Mike Freelander.
The multideck car park will incorporate lift access and 14 secure bicycle parking areas in addition to several sustainable initiatives, including electric vehicle charging facilities, a rooftop solar panel array and battery storage and rainwater tanks.
The project received an additional $2.91 million in Australian Government funding following the 2023 Infrastructure investment program strategic review.
Construction of the $25 million project is fully funded by the Australian Government, while council is the owner of the land.
Arenco has been awarded the contract to carry out the car park upgrade.
It is expected construction on the project will be complete towards the end of 2024.
“The Australian Government is proud to be partnering with Campbelltown City Council to improve access to public transport for residents of south-western Sydney,’’ Ms King said.
“Infrastructure partnerships like this one can make a real difference in our fast-growing suburbs and regions.”
Dr Freelander said the car park is a big win for our community.
“The Australian Government is firmly committed to supporting public transport use through expanded park-and-ride facilities for the Macarthur region, with Campbelltown Station serving as the premier train station for much of South West Sydney,’’ he said.
“That is why we are fully funding this project – with the end goal to contribute to reduced congestion around the Campbelltown CBD and arterial roads.
“Investing in local infrastructure is key in meeting the growing demands of our region and I am proud to be part of a government that understands this and is delivering,” Dr Freelander said.
Mayor Greiss said Campbelltown Station is among the busiest transport hubs in the Macarthur region, servicing residents from Campbelltown and beyond.
“These additional parking spaces will make it easier for commuters to access the Sydney and Parramatta CBDs and surrounding areas,’’ he said.
“As our region continues to grow, it’s important that we collaborate across multiple levels of government to deliver projects such as this to ensure local services keep pace with growth.”
