Guide to lock in Camden heritage buildings’ authentic look

Camden is one of the earliest and most historically significant council areas in Australia.

This can be witnessed through the diverse variety of buildings and structures constructed throughout Camden’s history, many of which remain to this day.

Camden’s built heritage dates from as early as the 1830s and spans a number of stylistic periods that demonstrate the development of the local area over almost 200 years.

To ensure Camden’s built heritage is proudly celebrated and preserved for future generations, it is important that any changes made to heritage buildings are carefully considered.

Which is why Camden Council has now created a handy guide for owners of local heritage buildings with practical tips on working with the specific materials and colour schemes traditionally used.

The Camden material and colour guide, an initiative of council’s heritage advisory committee, provides information and advice for property owners to consider when proposing works to a heritage building.

It also breaks down the different kinds of heritage buildings and the appropriate colour schemes.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, said she thought the guide would be incredibly useful for owners of local heritage buildings such as Wivenhoe Heritage House in Kirkham (pictured above).

“I know from conversations with homeowners that when someone owns a heritage building in the Camden area, they are incredibly passionate about preserving its character,” she said.

“I hope the Camden material and colour guide makes it a little bit simpler for those people to be able to identify what kinds of works would best suit their properties, allowing them to retain their charm.”

The guide is intended to assist property owners and developers to choose the most appropriate materials and colours for works in the Camden local government area.

However, owners are asked to remember that any work to items and buildings within heritage conservation areas will require development consent or a written exemption from council before proceeding.
