As the Camden population grows, so does the cultural background and heritage of its residents.

Almost 20 per cent of residents living in the Camden LGA were born overseas and 11 per cent from non-English speaking backgrounds.

According to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures from 2016, the Camden local government area has the highest number of people from India of all non-English speaking backgrounds, followed by Fiji and the Philippines.

“The Camden area is home to people from all cultural backgrounds and our community continues to change as it grows at a faster rate than almost anywhere else in Australia,” says Mayor Lara Symkowiak.

A celebration of cultural diversity will be held as part of the Festival of Lights this Saturday, October 21.

The cultural influences of India will be a central theme of the event that will merge the tastes, performances and vibrant traditional dress into a one day festival.

“Events such as these are the foundation to supporting an inclusive and enriched community,” she said.

The free event will be held from 10am and until 3pm at Town Park, Oran Park.

There will be live entertainment, Bollywood performances, cultural fashion parade, kids’ activities, food and drinks.
