New look Bulls still a work in progress

Macarthur FC will host Brisbane Roar this coming Sunday, in round four of the A-League.

The Bulls will go into the match undefeated so far this season, but still with a lot of improvement in what is virtually a brand new squad.

Tatsuki Nara, Connor Pain, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, Ryan Fraser, and Musa Toure are among the new signings at Campbelltown.

It goes without saying that there is also a new coach, with Sasa Ognenovski taking over the reins after the departure of Mile Sterjovski.

The new coach has made it clear he wants to develop a team that just goes for it, one with a strong attacking mentality.

It’s early, of course, but so far the Bulls are steady, with patches of quickfire counterattacking football.

They came back from 1-0 down to win their first round match against Perth Glory 2-1, a sign there’s plenty of fight in the team.

They repeated the approach against Newcastle a week later, grabbing an equaliser late in the match.

Back at Campbelltown on Saturday night when they hosted Western Sydney rivals Wanderers, it’s fair to say that they were lucky to escape with a 0-0 draw from that one.

The Wanderers, who dominated much of the game, scored early in the first half, but after a long VAR look the goal was disallowed, much to the relief of the locals.

To be fair, the players on the pitch would have found the lack of atmosphere a little disconcerting.

Despite a healthy 6,232 crowd, there was hardly a sound from the stands, including the active support group of the visitors.

Apparently they took umbrage at what they saw as a heavy handed approach from the police, who positioned themselves behind the active group on the north-east corner.

The Wanderers fans decided to react by pledging to stay silent for the first 20 minutes of the game, which is what eventuated.

It was almost a relief when fan noise returned around the ground.

But it didn’t help the Bulls, who are still trying to work out their combinations.

Hopefully a lot of that will come this Sunday at Campbelltown Stadium against the Brisbane Roar.

Kick-off is at 3pm.
