A Macarthur FC Campbelltown resident match day costing ratepayers less than $50,000 would deliver a range of community benefits, says a report to Campbelltown Council.
This Tuesday night the council will consider a proposal from the locally based A-League club for essentially a free entry competition game for the next seven years.
Council would receive 7000 tickets to a Macarthur FC game to distribute to local residents.
Council is leaning towards giving the green light to just one year as part of a trial to gauge its success or otherwise.
If that is the case on Tuesday night, the last A-League round where the Bulls will host Wellington Phoenix at Campbelltown stadium on April 24 looks like the most likely date for the trial.
The report says that by removing financial barriers to attending a game would allow for “broad access for residents, particularly families, young people, seniors and lower-income households.
“The initiative promotes participation across all suburbs, strengthening inclusion and equity,’’ the report says.
“It reinforces Campbelltown’s identity as the home of Macarthur FC and establishes an annual event that brings the community together, fostering civic pride and local connection.
“The match also enhances social and mental wellbeing by providing a safe, welcoming and shared community experience.
“In addition, increased stadium attendance generates positive economic activity through higher local spending and food and beverage return, while offering valuable visibility and engagement opportunities for local clubs, groups and businesses.’’
Council officers are recommending a one year trial, starting this season.
If council resolves to accept the proposal for one trial match, next steps will include co-design of event program with Macarthur FC, including accessible and culturally inclusive components, ticketing system with postcode/ID residency verification, and marketing and promotional campaign through council, club, and community networks.
