Campbelltown’s going pink for breast cancer

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in Campbelltown.

Statistics from the Cancer Institute of NSW show breast cancer made up 12 per cent of cancer cases between 2011 and 2015 in the area.

To help the McGrath Foundation raise money for more breast cancer nurses where they are needed most, Campbelltown will be going pink next month.

Initiatives will include wrapping trees along Hurley Street and Pembroke Road in an eco-friendly, flexible and biodegradable pink jute and some council vehicles will be “pinked out’’ during October.

Council is also calling on local business and community organisations to get behind the Pink Up Campbelltown fundraiser by organising their own events.

The more involvement from the community, the more pink Campbelltown will look, it says.

Any groups that plan an event or fundraiser will be able to have it featured on the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Up Campbelltown website or at council’s website and social media platforms.

Campbelltown Council general manager Lindy Deitz (centre), Club Menangle chief executive Bruce Christenson and council staff Lisa King, Kendra O’Neill and Tamara Leetham get into the spirit of Pink Up Campbelltown.

Council will also be supporting the initiative with the Pink Fete on the Lawn at the Campbelltown Civic Centre on Tuesday, October 1 where staff will raise money.

Donation boxes will be placed at libraries, sports facilities and in council’s mobile education van throughout the month.

Residents are also invited to family fun event, Pinknic at Mawson Park on Friday, October 18 from 6pm to 8pm where they are encouraged to don their best pink outfit, grab dinner from a food truck and watch a family movie on the big screen.

A supporter poster and sticker pack to create a reception or window display is available in return for a $100 donation. To get a pack, email business@campbelltown.nsw.gov.au or call 4645 4076. You can register an event with Council via email: media@campbelltown.nsw.gov.au.
