Mayor's Charity Night brings results for school
Here is the money: Mayor Paul Hawker is pictured with Samuel Tutunoa, one of the students attending Mary Brooksbank School.

Students, teachers and the wider school community of Mary Brooksbank School will soon start planning for a significant upgrade of their library space, thanks to the proceeds of this year’s Mayor’s Charity Race Night.

Held in the Lawn Marquee at Tabcorp Park, Menangle and with the generous support of local businesses and the community, it raised more than $20,000 on the night.

The money will help fund a much needed refurbishment of the school library to make it a purposeful learning space for teachers and a fun environment for students with special needs, from kindergarten to year 12.

While the school’s buildings and grounds were specifically designed with the needs of students with disabilities in mind, the library has become more of a storage space than a functional area. The proceeds of the event will help to transform the facility by creating a calming reading area with accessible shelving and comfortable chairs, improving storage to open up the small space, and adding roll-away tables where students can explore and learn using technology.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Hawker, thanked local businesses, organisations and individuals for their support in helping Mary Brooksbank School with their goal of creating a library facility that reflected their core values of inclusion and opportunity.

“As mayor of Campbelltown, I am often humbled by the generosity, kindness and compassion demonstrated by our community – particularly when it comes to supporting a worthy cause – and I sincerely thank all of those who have helped make a significant difference to the daily lives of students, teachers and parents of the school,” said Cr Hawker.

“Providing the right support to enable children to learn at their own pace is just as vital as having the right space to learn in.’’
