MP Greg Warren hits out on prison plans
Give us a safe Appin Road not Australia’s biggest prison, says MP Greg Warren

Will Australia’s biggest prison end up being built in Campbelltown’s backyard?

Campbelltown MP Greg Warren is not taking any chances so he has quickly moved to slam the Baird Government’s proposed plans for a super jail in the Macarthur region.

Mr Warren said today that there are other, more important infrastructure projects that should be built in the Macarthur region before a massive, 5,000-inmate capacity prison is even considered.

Mr Warren said that the Baird Government should be putting the $1 billion that will reportedly be spent on the proposed prison towards funding vital infrastructure projects and upgrades in the region.

The local MP’s comments come after reports that the Baird Government plans on building the biggest prison in Australia at one of three sites in the Wollondilly Shire, just south of Campbelltown.

“As Minister for Western Sydney, Mike Baird wants to build a prison in our backyard instead of fixing things like Appin Road, building the promised Spring Farm Link Road or one of the many new schools we are going to need with our growing population,” Mr Warren said.

“It was this government that identified Campbelltown as a regional city, and the Greater Macarthur area as a priority growth area.

“So it just doesn’t make sense for them to turn around and decide to dump the country’s biggest prison right in our backyard.

“Mike Baird is only talking about building a super-prison in Campbelltown’s backyard so that he can close Long Bay jail and flog off the prime waterfront land it occupies to the highest bidder.”
