Australia Day honours 2017: late Fred Borg receives OAM

The late Fred Borg has received in OAM in the 2017 Order of Australia honours.

The late councillor Fred Borg, who died suddenly just before last Christmas, is among five Macarthur residents who have been named in the 2017 Australia Day honours.

Sadly, Cr Borg was one of two recipients who passed away after being successfully nominated.

Richard Biele, of Hill Top, who received an Order of Australia Medal for service to youth and to veterans and their families, has also passed away.

The late Councillor Borg received his OAM For service to local government and to the community of Campbelltown.

The other three recipients from the area were:

• Peter Leon Enderby, of Macarthur Village, Campbelltown, for service to the community, particularly to Justices of the Peace.

• Bryan John Schafer, of Ingleburn, for service to rugby league and to veterans and their families.

• Peter Joseph Nickl, of Yerrinbool, for service to youth through scouting.

Councillor Borg had previously been honoured with the national volunteer of the year award for Werriwa/Macarthur in 2011, Campbelltown Citizen of the Year in 1998 and Rotary Club of Campbelltown citizen of the year.

His OAM is for his role in the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer and for serving 17 years as a councillor as well as other community service acts.

Peter Enderby has been a Justice of the Peace since 1969, secretary of the Macarthur branch of the Justices Association since 2008 and director of the NSW Justices Association since 2012.

The late Richard Biele was instructor of cadets, 218 Regional Cadet Unit, Campbelltown since 1998 and member of the Picton-Thirlmere-Bargo sub-branch of the Returned and Services League of Australia.

Bryan John Schafer has been Western Suburbs junior representative secretary since 1998 and manager of Wests Magpies Rugby League team, since 1999.

He was assistant to the first grade head coach between 1992-1999 and made life member in 2014.

He was clubman of the year, Western Suburbs Rugby League Past Players’ Association, 2007.

Peter Joseph Nickl served Scouts NSW in a number of capacities, including:

Regional Commissioner International, Greater Western Sydney, since 2003.

Member, Lone Scout Fellowship, since 2009.

Member, State International Fellowship Team Committee, since 2011.

Member, Scout Heritage Fellowship, since 2014.

Various positions including Scout Leader, District Commissioner, and Regional Leader, since 1963.

Life Councillor, 2015.

Member, Asia Pacific Region Association for Top Achieving Scouts, current.

Awards and recognition include 50 Year Adult Service Decoration, 2013, Silver Kangaroo Award, 2003 and Silver Emu, 1998.
