The revitalisation of Argyle Street in Camden will continue with the landscaping of a concrete section of the road’s median to improve the visual appeal of the historic town centre.
This week, Camden Council resolved to accept the tender of a construction company to remove and replace the 80 metre length of median between Elizabeth Street and Edward Street along Argyle Street.
The median strip will also be widened to allow for the planting of eight new advanced Jacarandah trees.
Jacarandah trees were chosen for consistency with the rest of the landscaping in Argyle street.
“These works will improve the appearance of the eastern entrance to the Camden town centre and transform the concrete median strip into an attractive green space,” Mayor Lara Symkowiak said.
“The works will enhance the streetscape for residents and visitors to the town centre to enjoy,’’ she said.
The $440,000 project will include the construction of a 2.6 metre wide median strip, drainage works, signage, line marking, adjustment of road levels and landscaping.
Argyle Street enhancement works between Hill Street and Oxley Street intersections are now complete.
These works included the installation of traffic lights, widening the footpath, replacement of footpath pavers and street furniture, lighting and pedestrian signals.
The upgrades to the median at the eastern end of the main street are expected to begin next month and be completed in July, weather permitting.
