As summer approaches more and more people will hit the road – Appin Road – and that worries local MP Greg Warren
He’s concerned that more motorists travelling on Appin Road from Macarthur to the Illawarra will mean more people exposed to the dangers posed by this lethal stretch of road.
“Everyone that has traversed the Appin Road knows of the inherent dangers it presents,” says Mr Warren.
“I used to drive coal trucks up and down the Appin Road so I am well aware of the issues. With one lane the majority of the way and trees closely bordering the shoulder of the road, there isn’t a lot of a room for error,’’ he said.
“As a result we have tragically seen dozens of lives lost on the road over the past few decades. Countless native wildlife have also been killed after collisions with motor vehicles.’’
Mr Warren has just tabled a notice of motion in the NSW parliament calling on the Berejiklian Government to make Appin Road safe once and for all.
“It is not the responsibility of developers to fund the upgrades of this road, it is up to the state government,’’ he said.
“This is a problem that cannot be ignored any longer.’’
Mr Warren has long pushed for the road to be upgraded to a duel carriageway and for provisions to be made to ensure native wildlife can cross the road without having to navigate oncoming vehicles.
“Fast-tracking the duplication of the Appin Road would not only increase motorist safety, it would also be a big job creator – something certainly needed during this Covid-19 crisis,” he said.
Mr Warren says NSW Labor committed $100 million towards upgrades of Appin Road prior to the 2019 state election.
