Alternative medicine slipping into mainstream

Acupuncture is just one of many alternative approaches to health.

People of my vintage will have grown up with the western medical model of health and healing, meaning that when you were sick, your parents took you to a doctor and you were generally given medicine to make you well again, writes psychologist and author MARGARET LAMBERT in her latest column.

As a result, most of us have come to believe in this one form of healing, and thank goodness in our country, we have access to a high level of health care.

There are times however, when the Western medical model is not able to help us, and we have probably become too reliant upon it to “fix” us.

It is often the case that when the traditional medications and approaches have not helped our conditions that we begin to look elsewhere.

This was the case with me, and in my search for better health, I discovered a whole range of treatments that I never otherwise would have researched.

These other approaches and treatments have become known as “alternative,” but many are fast moving into the mainstream.

There are so many approaches available to us for better health and wellbeing besides the traditional medical approach.

Many of these other approaches require us to have greater awareness of our bodies and take greater responsibility for our health – after all, we are the best ones to know what is going on with us and we are the ones who have our best interests at heart!

There are many health approaches that are certainly worth considering in your quest to attain optimum health and reduce the onset or escalation of disease. Some of these treatments are: naturopathy, acupuncture, kinesiology, chi gung, reiki, and my all time favourite, EFT – Emotional Freedom Techniques.

FT is a great technique for reducing physical symptoms and negative emotions related to past memories or unhelpful thoughts – great for reducing stress and anxiety symptoms.

If you’d like to know more about EFT, you can check out my website here. Instructions for using EFT are also available on the site.

I encourage you to look further into these therapies and health approaches and please note, this is not a replacement for checking in with your doctor.

Until next time,

Margaret Lambert
