Some scholars believe that Father’s Day started nearly 4,000 years ago in Babylon when a young boy called Elmesu carved a message on a card made out of clay wishing his father good health and a long life.
In more recent times, around 1910 to be exact, a young American woman living in Washington decided that fathers should be honoured with a special day dedicated to them just like Mother’s Day.
And like so many other American initiatives Father’s Day spread across the world and is celebrated every year.
Here in Australia Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September but has never enjoyed the level of popularity that Mother’s Day does.
That may be about to change, starting right here in Campbelltown.
Shefali Kapil, who owns and runs the popular Alkalizer wellness eatery next to the entrance to the council building in Queen Street, wants to add a little fanfare to Father’s Day.
“My father’s my hero and I think fathers deserve some more recognition for what they do,’’ says Shefali.
[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“I think that sometime fathers are taken for granted so it would be nice to make a fuss about them on this day.’’[/social_quote]
Shefali says there will be a festive atmosphere at Alkalizer on Father’s Day, including some tremendous entertainment that will include a performance from local star Luke Koteras of The Voice fame.
Koteras will be on from 10am and Shefali says another local group will also be on the entertainment card for Father’s Day.
So this Father’s Day, if you would like to make your father feel little a little more special than usual book a table at Alkalizer for Sunday, September 3.
As for the food, if you’re there for breakfast and father has a large appetite recommend the Alkalizer Breakfast Board.
If eggs your way, grilled herbed tomatoes, quinoa filled avocado, baby beetroot, crispy kale, mixed greens with lemon thyme, sauteed mushrooms, beans with sauteed spinach, grilled haloumi, hash browns and vienna sourdough are not enough, ask for some bacon or grilled chicken strips and that should do the trick for a very Happy Father’s Day.
