The funeral for former Labor MP and Liverpool councillor Alison Megarrity will be held on Friday, November 25 at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moorebank at 11am.

Ms Megarrity passed away on Tuesday, November 15, after a long battle with cancer.

She was 61.

“Quite simply she was the hardest working member of parliament that it was my pleasure to serve with,’’ said Geoff Corrigan, a fellow Labor MP of Megarrity’s.

“Alison was loved and respected by everyone in the parliament,’’ he said in a short tribute to the former member for Menai (March 1999 to March 2011).

She also served on Liverpool Council for one term, 1994 to 1999.

“I sat beside Alison during Question Time during our last term in Parliament from 2007-2011 and I marvelled at the work she did for her community,’’ said Mr Corrigan, who was the member for Camden for two terms.

“She was tireless in her dedication to her electorate, never being afraid to take on ministers if she felt her electorate was missing out.

“But more than this she was a wonderful wife and mum, who was very proud of her sons,’’ he said.

Current members of the NSW parliament and officers of the Legislative Assembly stood in their places as a mark of respect after the Speaker announced the death of Ms Megarrity today.

“It is with regret that I inform the House of the death on 15 November 2022 of Ms Alison Patricia Megarrity, who served as assistant speaker from May 2007 to March 2011,’’ the Speaker told the House.

“On behalf of the House I extend to Ms Megarrity’s family the deep sympathy of the Legislative Assembly in the loss sustained. Ms Megarrity’s death will be the subject of a motion of sympathy on a future day.’’

There was also a tribute from the Former Members Association, which said: “It is with deep regret that the executive advises members of the devastating news that our esteemed president Alison Patricia Megarrity has passed away.

“Alison will be remembered for her loyalty in friendship, her relentless hard work and the dignity, optimism, determination and constant good humour with which she fought her final illness.

“Alison was the tireless secretary of the Former Members Association for three years and became the President in 2021. She continued working tenaciously in that role until days before her death.

“Our kindest thoughts are with go her husband Robert and her two sons Liam and Glyn.’’
