Hopefully we’re ready for AI because it’s already here

Can AI eliminate cancer? Let’s hope so.

I was going to say here’s hoping we’re all ready for the looming AI tsunami, but who am I kidding?

Looking back to the past six months there is nothing looming about the artificial intelligence revolution.

AI is actually here, it’s real and slowly but surely weaving its way into all parts of our lives.

What we don’t know, and probably won’t for a while yet, is the kind of impact it will have after it’s been around for a while.

It will have an impact, no doubt about that, but we don’t yet know what that really means.

No doubt we all have our fingers crossed that the impact of AI will mostly be positive, aligning with how the information technology has rolled out so far.

It’s true that many people are still wary of new technology, especially the type that breaches their privacy boundaries.

A few weeks ago I was getting a smart electricity meter installed and the technician, before launching into it, asked me if I was sure I wanted to go ahead.

I said yes, and asked the young fellow why the question.

Many people aren’t keen on them, he told me. They worry it’s another device that will invade their privacy, that kind of thing.

For me, I told him, such concerns are a bit late, when pretty much everything we do is recorded one way or another.

We should be just working hard to make sure change is good for we humans.

And this is the game plan, too, for AI, or it ought to be.

Make it work for the good of humanity, not the good of the government, I say.

They say the possibilities are unlimited with AI, so on that basis here’s my Top 5 things it can make better:

Number 1. Find a cure for cancer, that has to be right up the top of the agenda, surely.

Number 2. Eliminate the risk of pandemics, etc.

Number 3. Off to Mars we go, maybe even live there.

Number 4. Solve every conflict on our planet.

Number 5. End famine across the world once and for all.
