Do the right thing: recycle old DVDs and CDs instead of just chucking them in the garbage bin.

Local residents can now dispose of old CDs and DVDs in an eco friendly way.

While CDs and DVDs are made from polycarbonate plastic and are non-biodegradable, they also contain metals like aluminium and gold, and can be recycled into automotive industry parts, office equipment, street lights and electrical cable insulation.

Campbelltown City Council’s CD and DVD recycling program enables residents to have access to a more sustainable way to dispose of such consumer goods.

Council is committed to working with residents to increase recycling awareness and promote sustainable practices, says Mayor Paul Hawker

“When discs are placed in the garbage, they end up in landfill whereas this program provides residents with a more sustainable way to dispose them,” Cr Hawker said.

“It’s council’s goal to make recycling easy and provide a variety of waste and recycling programs to support residents to make sustainable choices.

As they require specialised recycling methods, CDs and DVDs should not be placed in household recycling bins, but can be dropped off at collection boxes located at Campbelltown City Library branches and leisure centres, as well as Campbelltown Civic Centre.

Residents are asked to remove any confidential information from data discs before disposal.

Only CDs, DVDs, their cases and paper inserts should be placed in the collection boxes, and only domestic quantities will be accepted.
