Walk for a good cause: The 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur gets under way this morning at Campbelltown Sports Ground.

It’s on again – one of south west Sydney’s most popular fundraisers, the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur got under way at 10am this morning inside the athletics field of Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

And the first thing founder and chairperson Fred Borg did while launching this year’s event was to present a team called Dawnbreakers, who had walked from Camden to Campbelltown and already raised $10,000.

They got a huge cheer from those in the stands when its members walked into the stadium holding a giant $10,000 cheque.

Its members included representatives of local rugby league club, the East Campbelltown Eagles.

Mr Borg said that while the charity had raised more than $3 million over 10 years for cancer services in Macarthur, there was always need for more such services and equipment.

“We just got a wish list that would cost more than $300,000, so we need to keep going,’’Mr Borg said.

The next speaker, local businessman Arthur Panoutsopoulos, raised the emotional level inside the stadium with his personal account of the people in his life who had been hit by the scourge of cancer.

At one stage he became emotional himself before receiving a massive applause.

Mr Panoutsopoulos and the Campbelltown Camden District Band led the traditional start of the walk around the stadium.

Joining the scores of walkers were the official launch guests such as the mayor of Campbelltown, Paul Hawker, MPs Laurie Ferguson, Anoulack Chanthivong and Greg Warren, Wests Leagues CEO Tony Mathew and others.
