The NSW Planning Assessement Commission decision to approve the controversial recycling plant in Moorebank has been slammed as “an absolute disgrace’’ in Federal Parliament.
Following an attack by State MP Melanie Gibbons earlier in the week and Liverpool Council seeking legal advice to fight the decision in the courts, the approval came under fire in Canberra.
Liberal MP, Craig Kelly, who holds the local seat of Hughes, told Federal Parliament, called the decision “atrocious’’ and “appalling’’, among other things.
“I rise to speak on a recent decision by the NSW Planning Assessment Commission on what they call the ‘Resource Recovery Facility’ at Moorebank,’’ Mr Kelly told the House of Representatives.
“It is more accurate to call this a concrete crushing plant at Moorebank, which will crush half a million tonnes of bricks, asphalt and concrete close to a residential area.
“This is a project that has a long and sordid history of dodgy rezonings and political cash handed to the Labor Party.
“The latest in this sordid affair, is the appalling and atrocious decision by the NSW Planning Assessment Commission to approve this.
“The decision is simply devoid of logic and it simply ignores the evidence,’’ Mr Kelly said.
“The decision lacks a fundamental understanding of air pollution, especially particulate matter, and relflects poorly on those that sit on this Commission.
[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“The proponent’s original proposal did not even consider, or have any information about, fine particulate matter. For that reason alone it should have been rejected by the Planning Assessment Commission.[/social_quote]
“This is an absolute disgrace.
“We need to take air pollution seriously in Western Sydney.
“I will continue to stand with our local council and our local state member, Melanie Gibbons, and do everything we can to oppose this.
“This is an appalling decision by the NSW Planning Assessment Commission. They should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.’’
I am appalled by the decision of the Planning & Assessment Committee as well.
I was the third speaker, in a long list of public speakers voicing their objections to this facility at the public meeting held in the Golf Club House at Milperra recently.
Each & every speaker had valid & flawless objections.
It is unconscionable conduct for the Planning and Assessment Committee to allow this development to proceed!
I’m 50 years old and if I contracted lung cancer or alike from this plant; well so be it; I consider myself to have had a pretty good life so far; but how about our children and grandchildren that live in this peaceful & harmonious neighbourhood.
Perhaps we will need to have them indoors on their ipads checking the outdoor air quality!
Shame on PAC.
