Queen Street makeover as council finally acts

The much maligned Queen Street of Campbelltown is about to undergo a makeover.

Over the next few weeks Campbelltown City Council says it will embark on an upgrade of public spaces in the Queen Street CBD precinct.

Council says it wants to rejuvenate the city’s main street.

The first stage of the refurbishment will see the repaving of a number of asphalt sections along the footpath, which were the result of service authority repair works.

Repaving work will extend from Railway Parade to Dumaresq Street.

Additional works will be undertaken to correct uneven surfaces and clean and re-seal existing pavers to improve the aesthetics of the paved footpath feature.

Council says it will also upgrade the shade structure at Lithgow Street and replace damaged shade cloth.

It will also install LED lights to improve visibility and lift the amenity of the area.

Existing concrete seating along Queen Street will also be cleaned and re-sealed.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Lake, said Campbelltown needed a main street that reflected its status as a Regional City Centre and the business hub of the Macarthur region.

“The initial program of works will provide an immediate visual enhancement as well as improving safety,’’ the mayor said.

“Council estimates that some of the fixtures are almost 20 years old, so while they have provided good service, it’s time for an update,” Cr Lake said.

“The redevelopment of the city centre will be one of the most significant projects to be undertaken in coming years, and will require business and community consultation to ensure there is a clear strategic direction, before we embark on any major works.

“As part of this process, we’ll also be investigating opportunities for activating the Lithgow Street mall space,’’ Cr Lake said.

“We want to work with the community to reinvent Queen Street, so it becomes a destination in its own right,” Cr Lake said.
