It’s understandable that sudden petrol price hikes will make motorists angry. Especially those doing it tough right in the middle of a cost of living crisis that has forced some working Aussies to live in tents
But taking your anger out at some poor service station attendant is just not on.
Two weeks into the war on Iran that has directly caused the price of oil to shoot to the stratosphere and there are heaps of stories of attendants being abused by the odd angry motorist.
A few days into the conflict, I was in front of one such angry ant while we were queueing up to pay for fuel at the popular Lindesay Street servo.
This dude behind me wasn’t mincing his loud words, which were clearly directed at the attendant.
You’re ripping us off, this is not on, and other words were used by this person in a very angry tone to harangue the attendant.
The anger in his voice was palpable and you couldn’t help wondering what was coming next. Someone that angry, well, you just never know what else they might do if their emotions get the better of them.
Someone in the queue asked the man to be reasonable, and to consider the fact the service station attendant played no part at all in the price of petrol being hiked up.
He just dismissed it.
I left feeling a little disturbed about that episode.
Thinking about it later, the conclusion I drew was that more people should have stood up to the angry fellow.
Not because he was wrong in what he was saying, but in how he was saying it.
As they say, there’s more than one way to skin a cat.
You can make your point in a nice way, and it will be noticed just as much, if not more than doing it the angry way.
Or to put it another way, we all have to live with each other, so let’s not make it worse that it is already.
There’s no point in saying anything to the petrol station attendant. They just get a phone call from the corporate office to say put the price up or down and they have to respond. It’s the huge fuel companies directly price gouging before the war impacted prices. If you want to complain you need to do so via head office.
