Tigers host Cowboys on 20th anniversary of grand final win

Jarome Luai celebrating the victory over Manly on Sunday.

If they don’t talk about the premiership victory of ’05 before running onto the field to face the Cowboys this Sunday, the Wests Tigers players will get accused of not being human.

But of course they’re human, and yes they will hark back to that incredible grand final on October 2, 2005.

A flick for the ages from their current coach, Benji Marshall might get a mention, as will the history making victory over the North Queensland Cowboys.

After all it’s the 20th anniversary of that epic effort and it’s worth celebrating, on and off the field.

And while this Wests Tigers team won’t enjoy a sweeter victory than the one over the Bulldogs a couple of weeks ago, a win over the Cowboys will go close.

Don’t want to jump the gun, but it would also be their 10th win of the 2025 season, which would be a mighty achievement considering how their season was derailed a little while back.

Mind you Sunday’s 26-12 win over Manly wasn’t too shabby, either.

The Tigers were superbly led around the field by co-captain Jarome Luai, whose contribution has improved every game.

He doesn’t get the wraps he deserves, but that won’t bother him too much.

His co-captain Api Koroisau wasn’t too far behind, with another solid effort.

Banji Marshall was obviously happy with both the win and the effort, because he hasn’t made any changes to this week’s lineup for the Cowboys clash at Leichhardt Oval.

The match will kick off at 4pm.
