Man dies after being shot by police at Middleton Grange

A man died after being shot by police near Liverpool just before midnight on Saturday night.

A critical incident investigation is now under way.

 Emergency services were called to Bird Walton Avenue, Middleton Grange at around 11pm, following reports a man was allegedly armed with a knife.

On arrival, officers attached to the South-West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad were confronted and threatened by a 34-year-old man with a knife.

Initial information indicates that a male officer was struck with the knife, but was protected by his operational vest and was not physically injured.

A taser was used and proved ineffective and the male was shot by police.

The officers conducted CPR until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics, who worked on the man; however, he could not be revived.

A critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation is also subject to an independent review.

In a separate incident, a man will face court after being charged after an alleged public place shooting in Austral.

Police were called to Sixteenth Avenue, Austral, following reports gunshots had been heard in the vicinity.

A short time later, police received further reports a vehicle had crashed on Craik Avenue, before two men allegedly ran from the scene.

On arrival, officers attached to Liverpool City Police Area Command found bullet casings and a fuel cannister inside the abandoned vehicle.

Enquiries revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen.

With assistance from the Dog Unit, an empty pistol magazine was found on Seventeenth Avenue.

About 11.35pm, police located a 30-year-old man on Fourth Avenue, Austral.

He was taken to Liverpool Police Station where he was charged with four offences. He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
