When the hot weather is here will be the real test of the Campbelltown Billabong Parklands, which welcomed 3,092 people through the gates since it was officially opened on Saturday morning.
And what’s more, tickets for this upcoming Saturday and Sunday are already sold out, Campbelltown Mayor George told last night’s council meeting.
Councillor Greiss also made a little bit of history when he became the first person to enter the water at the main lagoon of the Billabong.
But it wasn’t a sudden brain snap that saw him wade into the water wearing a suit and tie during a particularly cold winter morning.
“No, it was all planned,’’ he told the South West Voice later.
“What an absolute joy it was to test the water and be the first person to experience the lagoons. The excitement of getting into the crystal-clear, 1.1 million litres of refreshing water was indescribable,’’ he wrote in last night’s Mayoral Minute.
“It was my great pleasure to welcome everyone to celebrate the official opening of the Campbelltown Billabong Parklands.
“This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone for our city and represents a lasting legacy for the people of Campbelltown.’’
Several councillors also spoke glowingly of Campbelltown Billabong Parklands, the region’s newest attraction.
Cr Darcy Lound, who attended Saturday’s official opening, described it as a “great amenity’’.
“Congratulations to all council staff involved in delivering this project; it will be a great place to gather in Campbelltown,’’ Cr Lound said.
Cr Warren Morrison, who was overseas and missed the opening, predicted the facility would become a “great tourist attraction’’.
Cr Rey Manoto went a little further, describing it as a “destination, a landmark’’.
At the core of the 40,000 square metre parkland is a large lagoon, a centrepiece attraction spanning approximately 1600 square metres which is interconnected with a smaller children’s pool, a series of streams and a zero-depth splash play area.
Complementing this interactive water play areas are features such as streams, hand-sculpted rocks, water fountains, picnic huts, barbecues, shade structures, and natural landscaping.
These elements collectively create a year-round haven for relaxation, recreation, and community gatherings.
“I hope everyone has the opportunity to visit to the Campbelltown Billabong Parklands and eagerly anticipate the pools opening in a few months, brimming with happy, smiling faces,’’ aid Mayor Greiss.
