A new Koori Kulcha Aboriginal Corporation program, Street Warrior Camps, is about rebuilding connections for young people, says Auntie Marie Barbaric.
“Ultimately this wonderful program is about building hope,” says the manager of the Wollondilly based Koori Kulcha.
“The Street Warrior Camps are brand new and are built for the young people that Koori Kulcha works with who are disconnected from culture,’’ Auntie Marie said.
With support from local MP, Judy Hannan, the Street Warrior Camps have been awarded $19,993 in funding from the state government.
The program supports Aboriginal communities to strengthen, protect and maintain traditional and contemporary expressions of Aboriginal culture and support cultural events and activities.
The Koori Kulcha Aboriginal Corporation funding is part of $500,000 that will go towards celebrating Aboriginal culture in NSW, under the government’s Aboriginal Affairs cultural grants program.
These projects make-up the first round of a $1 million program which aims to further strengthen and celebrate Aboriginal culture locally across the State.
“This project will boost connection to culture and community for Aboriginal people in Wollondilly and give the wider community a greater appreciation for the strength and beauty of Aboriginal culture,’’ says Judy Hannan.
“The project also provides opportunities for leadership and healing, teaching and learning.
“Connecting young people to their culture is so essential and I am very pleased to announce Koori Kulcha Aboriginal Corporation has been awarded this funding.’’
