For 60 years Harry Hunt was known in Liverpool and Macarthur for his iconic hotel opposite the Cross Roads Hotel on the old Hume Highway.
What was not as well known as Hunts Hotel was Harry’s determination to make tourism big in the South Western Sydney area.
Harry, who passed away last year, always believed we had enough attractions here for visitors from overseas and interstate to put on their itenerary.
It was apt that his successor at the South West Sydney Tourism Taskforce, Fazila Farhad, spoke on behalf of the Hunt family when a local community hub was named in harry Hunt’s honour over the long weekend.
“The renaming of the Lurnea Community Hub is a true reflection of the work he did selflessly,’’ Ms Farhad said at the dedication ceremony.
Liverpool mayor Ned Mannoun unveiled the plaque, in the presence of the extended Hunt family, all on hand to share in the honour.
“Thank you Sue-Lei Mingay and Cybra for letting me represent the Hunt family and speak in honour of renaming Lurnea Community hub dedicated to our beloved and legendary Harry Hunt, OAM,’’ said the president of the Tourism Taskforce.
“Harry’s roots into the region are deep and so was his love for community.’’
Naming the hub after Harry Hunt is probably the first of many such honours for a man who did so much to make our community the best it could be.
As well as his campaign on tourism, Harry Hunt was also known for his generosity, including his famous Christmas lunches for the homeless.
He also served the local business chamber, as president, for many years.
And he was as well known in Liverpool as he was in Campbelltown and the wider Macarthur area.
Harry was a wonderful person. Proud to have known him
Harry was a top community hero.
Harry will always be known As Mr Liverpool for all the amazing charity work he did for so many people. He was the absolute leader of our community.
