Fire and Rescue NSW says the Brands on Sale on building in Queen Street, Campbelltown is derelict and a “significant risk to the health and safety of any person that enters the premises, including firefighters’’.
Now a report to council says it is set to be demolished to make way for a $220 million redevelopment.
The retail centre known as Brands on Sale closed down after it flopped commercially close to 10 years ago.
Following a fire there late last year, FRNSW have continued to monitor the building, and now, in a report to Campbelltown Council, have urged urgent action.
“FRNSW’s inspecting officers noted that ‘the premises’ was derelict and was unoccupied at the time of inspection, although vagrants, trespassers and squatters may unlawfully occupy the site from time to time,’’ the report said.
“The premises was in a significant state of disrepair, with damage being done by trespassers and vandals looking to strip the building of anything of value.’’
The report, which recommends council issue orders requiring the landowners to reinstate and maintain essential fire safety measures, or demolish the building, will be tabled at tonight’s meeting of Campbelltown Council.
Brands on Sale is located within 32 Queen Street.
The site is part of plans for a $220 million mixed use development incorporating five towers containing 558 apartments, commercial premises, basement car parking and associated site and landscape works.
On July 27 council officers met with FRNSW and representatives of the owners of the premises (Supa 88 Pty Limited) to identify options for resolving the fire safety concerns.
It was noted during the meeting that the proposed redevelopment of the premises as a mixed use retail and residential complex was the subject of a development application before the Sydney Western City Planning Panel.
Since the meeting, the panel has considered and approved the development application.
It was further noted that development consent has been issued for the demolition of the premises.
At the meeting, representatives of the owner committed to developing a timeline for the demolition of the premises, says the report to council.
