Picton is now well covered for defibrillators around the town centre.
And it’s all thanks to a round of golf.
The sport some dismissed as a “good walk wasted’’ is however a very popular fundraiser.
And in the case of Picton chamber of commerce, it means raising money that literally goes towards potentially saving people’s lives.
The chamber’s second annual “Golf Classic’’ at the historic Antill course earlier this month raised enough money – $5,000 – for two more defibrillators to be made available in the town centre of Picton.
One will be located near the Macarthur Credit Union premises and the second at the town square.
Both locations are near pedestrian crossings to aid accessibility.
“This is about the chamber giving back to the community,’’ a spokesperson said.
A special $500 contribution from Antill Golf Club, announced by president Kevin James, pictured above, right, with Geoff O’Brien from the chamber, at the golf day presentation, will enable the chamber to provide another defibrillator.
This one will be located near Hume Oval in the Botanic Garden precinct.
The three new defibrillators will add to the four already installed at the Wollondilly Shire Council chambers in Menangle Road, Picton Mall, Picton BP and Picton Bowling Club.
“It means Picton is now well covered for defibrillators,’’ the chamber spokesperson said.
“We are grateful to all sponsors and teams that participated, especially our three Gold Sponsors, Bendigo Community Bank, BP Picton and Bradcorp.’’
For the record, the winning team in the Ambrose competition of the golf day was David Greene’s AWPM, pictured below. Also for the record, the South West Voice team of Eric Kontos, Tess Danjoux (Marsdens), Peter Miller and former Camden MP Geoff Corrigan (main picture, top) did their best and had as much fun as possible for such a good cause.
Two cars on offer for a hole-in-one novelty event went back to the dealer’s premises because there was no winner from the 17 teams that participated in this charity golf day on May 19.
The real winners will be the people who live or visit Picton, which now boasts seven defibrillators in the town centre.
