The indigenous football program at Camden Tigers FC is set to go up a level after receiving $58,000 to stage an international gala day in July.
NSW Aboriginal Affairs minister Ben Franklin (pictured above with ball) announced the grant this afternoon in the club’s home ground, Ron Dine Reserve.
Present were club president Rod Ciantar, indigenous football program director Phil Dotti, local MP Peter Sidgreaves, Auntie Joyce mate and players of all ages.
The gala day will include international football matches against the visiting men and women’s Canadian Indigenous teams.
Minister Franklin said he loves what is happening at the Camden Tigers and their indigenous football program (IFP).
“I am really thrilled that I am able to do that [provide the funds] because what you’re doing on the ground is the embodiment of reconciliation in this nation,’’ he said.
“The IFP is practically showing what should happen in our communities.
“And this is supported by the entire community, and I love it. I love it,’’ Mr Franklin said.
The minister said he had received an excellent proposal for the funding and he believed a great event was coming to Camden.
“Hosting the Canadian Indigenous football teams of men and women will shine a light not just in Camden or Sydney, but across Australia,’’ he said.
“I think it will be really special.’’
Phil Dotti, after thanking the minister, said it will make a big difference for IFP, which has only been going for two years.
“What we’re doing is getting positives outcomes for the club and Aboriginal people,’’ he said.
“It’s a big leap forward for us, and it will also put Camden on the map, having the Canadians play here on July 9.’’
The South West Voice asked the minister if the $58,000 was guaranteed, given that we are in the middle of an election campaign.
“Very fair question,’’ Mr Franklin said.
“This money is not an election commitment, this is money I have signed on the dotted line, the money is coming here no matter what happens at the election.’’
Mr Franklin also promised to be back to Ron Dine Reserve on July 9 no matter who wins the March 25 election.
“Absolutely,’’ he said in response to our question.
