The latest bout of flooding has claimed a life in the Macarthur region. The body of a man has been recovered from a vehicle submerged in floodwater in Cobbitty earlier today.
Emergency services were contacted about 7.55am after the man was reported missing and his van was located shortly after, trapped in nearby floodwater.
Officers attached to Camden Police Area Command, with assistance from PolAir, police divers and the NSW State Emergency Service, commenced an operation and retrieved the body of the 68-year-old man just before 1pm today.
Police say he is yet to be formally identified.
The white van that the man was travelling in remains stuck in the floodwater and efforts to remove the vehicle continue.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death is under way and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
Cobbitty is one of the worse affected areas for flooding in the Camden Local Government Area.
Just as in the March floods (pictured), the village experienced heavy falls resulting in road and bridge closures.
Camden town was also inundated again near the bridge over the Nepean River and last night some residents were asked to evacuate.
At Menangle, the bridge over Nepean River went under early yesterday morning.
Further south, at Picton, it was a sleepless night for many as they waited to see if Stonequarry bridge would be closed due to the heavy rain expected overnight.
There was a sigh of relief this morning when the bridge was still open to traffic.
However, with more rain forecast, we’re not out of the woods yet.
Authorities in the meantime are repeating calls for everyone to avoid driving during this weather.
