The Men of League Foundation has launched a campaign to decide the best seven halfbacks since 1961 – the Magnificent 7.
Our own Tommy Raudonikis is in the mix for the public to choose from.
Closer to home, the Macarthur/Southern Highlands branch of the Men of League foundation is hoping to extend its reach in the region via the creation of sub committees.
The branch wants to set up a subcommittee in Macarthur and another in the Southern Highlands.
Each of the proposed sub committees would be tasked with helping to organise Men of League functions and carry out important welfare activities in its designated area.
Two meetings, one in each area, will be held by the Macarthur/Southern Highlands Branch of the Men of League to set up the proposed subcommittees.
The first meeting is scheduled for 5pm, this Thursday, June 11 at Wests Leagues Club Leumeah.
All north end, Group 6 clubs and Western Suburbs District Junior Rugby League Clubs and referee associations are invited to have members come along to the above meeting.
The second meeting will be held at 5pm on Thursday, June 25 at Mittagong RSL Club.
All mid/southern end, Group 6 Rugby League clubs and Group 6 Referee Association are invited to this meeting.
♦ Next month Men of League foundation will name the seven greatest halfbacks to have strapped on their boots and taken to the field since the first televised season in 1961.
The campaign comes in the lead up to Round 19 and the aptly named, NRL Men of League Heritage Round that aims to shine a light on the Foundation and the rich heritage of the game.
The Men of League Magnificent 7 is a public vote, giving the community the chance to have their say on the players they think should be named as the finest halfbacks to pull on the number seven jersey.
The public can choose from the 14 nominees – a mix of current players and former players, each of whom are amazing playmakers in their own right – selected by a panel of rugby league experts comprising of Wayne Bennett, Neil Cadigan, Phil Rothfield, Tim Sheens and Warren Smith.
The final seven, who have entertained, surprised and awed rugby league fans, will be unveiled at the annual Men of League Gala Dinner on Thursday, July 16, to kick off Men of League Heritage Round.
Ron Coote, chairman of the Men of League Foundation said, “We anticipate this competition will spark debate and passion among footy fans across the country. We’re a passionate bunch and we have strong connections to players, teams and clubs – that’s what makes rugby league so special, it invigorates a sense of mateship and spirited competition.
[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“The final 14 nominations – Greg Alexander, Cooper Cronk, Andrew Johns, Stacey Jones, Brett Kimmorley, Allan Langer, Steve Mortimer, Barry Muir, Tommy Raudonikis, Billy Smith, Peter Sterling, Ricky Stuart, Arthur Summons and Johnathan Thurston – all have some great attributes that put them in the running to be named one of the Magnificent 7, but we want the rugby league community to have their say.[/social_quote]
“Over the next few weeks, in the lead up to Heritage Round, the community can jump online to vote on who they think should make the top seven. We will then collate the final results and announce the Magnificent 7 at our Gala Dinner. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the heritage of the game than by recognising some of our finest halfbacks.”
