Many of those who responded to a council survey gave the night markets the thumbs up.

The popular Macarthur Night Markets will continue as a bi-monthly event at Mawson Park, Campbelltown following positive feedback from the community and the market operators.

They will return for the first time this year next week.

In December, councillors supported the continuation of the markets, which had been operating as part of a six-month pilot project on the first and third Friday of each month from 5pm to 9pm.

The night markets provide foodies and families with an opportunity to enjoy the taste and aromas of a variety of foods, live entertainment and a street fair atmosphere, all within the heart of the Campbelltown CBD.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said crowd numbers had exceeded expectations, with the night markets increasing in popularity with each event.

“The pilot project aimed to test community interest in an evening pop-up food stall event, and community feedback provided via an online council survey found 98 per cent of the 325 respondents would like to see the event continue,” he said.

“Eighty per cent of those surveyed said they would not usually come into Campbelltown CBD on a Friday night, and feedback also showed the markets were being used as a meeting place after work, where people could have a meal together and soak up the atmosphere before moving on to another venue within the town centre.

“Given the success of the pilot markets in providing new and innovative culinary experiences, bringing the community together, and reinvigorating the Campbelltown CBD, council will continue to investigate options for similar opportunities,’’ Cr Brticevic said.

The next Macarthur Night Markets will be held on Friday, January 19.
