Federal Member for Fowler, Chris Hayes, and the Mayor of Fairfield City, Frank Carbone, officially opened the 2014 Lions Clubs Convention in Cabramatta.
The annual convention was organised in our local multicultural community for the first time by the Cabramatta Lions Club. They were also assisted by young people from the Canley Vale High School Leo Club and Cabramatta High School Leo Club.
Held last weekend (October 10 to 12), the convention was attended by nearly 300 members from 40 different Lions Clubs from around NSW and Canberra, including Liverpool, Wakeley, Smithfield and Fairfield.
Conventioneers had yum cha and a food tasting tour around the different local restaurants. They also visited temples and saw many traditional cultural performances, including lion dancing for the very first time.
“I would like to congratulate Jenny Tew and the Cabramatta Lions Club for bringing so many visitors and showcasing our local multicultural community to them,” Mr Hayes said.
“It was an honour to have Chris Hayes MP and Mayor Frank Carbone to open our Convention. I would also like to thank the sponsors for making it financially possible for many local high school students to attend the Convention,” Mrs Tew said.
Many Conventioneers from around NSW and the ACT described this year’s Convention as “the best in a very long time,” as they had the rare opportunity to experience life and taste food in the most multicultural community in Australia.
