Australia Day: local MP causes social media storm

Local MP Greg Warren was the subject of a brutal attack on social media this week over Australia Day.

Mr Warren, who loves using social media to get his message out, posted support for the use on Australia Day billboards of the photo of the two young women dressed in Muslim clothing.

Well, the proverbial hit the fan and there were more than 50 negative comments about Mr Warren, including choice descriptions of him that we’ll leave to the imagination of our dear readers.

Discussing this with Mr Warren after Campbelltown’s Australia Day ceremony in Koshigaya Park yesterday the local MP was quite philosophical about having caused a minor storm on social media.

But former Labor candidate in Macarthur Ian Fulton, who was involved in the conversation, was not so sympathetic to those who bagged Mr Warren, saying they obviously had no idea what sort of a human being he is.

But as the MP pointed out, being online a lot of the critics were from far and wide, with few locals among them.

“And remember that I was actually supported by double the number who criticised me,’’ Mr Warren told South West Confidential.

If it’s any consolation to Mr Warren, the lunatic fringe on the left is just as bad as the lunatic fringe on the right that got stuck into him.

Burning the Aussie flag in violent demonstrations does more harm than good to the cause of indigenous Australians, but that doesn’t stop the left wing nut cases from slandering an entire nation.

In the end this is a salutary lesson why we must stick to the centre if we want to continue living in the lucky country.

♦ And still on Australia Day, Mayor George Brticevic revealed during his speech that he got into trouble at primary school in Macquarie Fields because he was sprung talking Croatian in the classroom.

“All the kids were talking so I wondered why only me and my Croatian mates were penalised,’’ he recalled.

Apparently little George started school not being able to speak English, but could speak Croatian.

The point of his story was that Australia has radically changed since those days, which is true.

February 1 official opening: The Clintons Lexus showroom during construction in Camden Valley Way, Gregory Hills.

♦ The swanky opening by Clintons Motors of their Lexus showroom at Gregory Hills will kick off the month of February in Macarthur. The showroom has been operating for a while but this will be the official opening.

On next Wednesday night, February 1, there will be some big names as part of it, including a recent Australian cricket captain, although that’s yet to be confirmed.

Unfortunately it is an invitation only function, where the lucky guests will be served French champagne.

♦ There will be no names and no pack drill, but a lot of people in the corporate boxes at Campbelltown Stadium left way before the final whistle was blown in the soccer match between the Wanderers and Newcastle last week.

Many were obviously rusted on rugby league fans and the round ball game left them cold.

I am sure it happens the other way around as well.

Not that South West Confidential can talk: invited by the AFL to a Swans game at the SCG many years ago we struggled through the first quarter.

It is true that we found AFL as exciting as watching paint dry.

So a minute or two into the second quarter we quietly slipped away and breathed a sigh of relief the second we got to Moore Park and freedom from the relentless boredom of watching very tall men scrap like seagulls fighting over hot chips.

Still, soccer people will get a chance to gain revenge by walking out early at the rugby league when South Sydney Rabbitohs take on Manly Sea Eagles in an official NRL trial at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday, February 11.

♦ Then again, there’s a month of summer to go, so cricket’s still the main game and locally the Camden Campbelltown Ghosts look set to record their first victory of the season this Saturday at Raby Sports Complex and would love to see as many fans as possible share this possible triumph.

Play starts from 10.30am, see you there.

And if you can’t get there but would like to know what’s going on you can listen to the live call by Mike Shean (pictured above) through his Macarthur Sports Radio.
