Park Central is one of the best new precincts in Campbelltown, but it has a dark side.
At last night’s council meeting, the last for the year, Councillor Fred Borg urged council to tackle the drug taking, vandalism and other acts of crimes being committed after dark in and around Parkside Drive, Park Central.
Cr Borg told council this was not a new problem.
“We’ve had these crime issues in Park Central for a very long time and it’s a not something we should put up with.
“Especially considering most of the people in Park Central are older,’’ Cr Borg said.
Park Central, which is located next to Campbelltown Hospital, contains a mixture of housing, including a large retirement village of apartments for people aged over 55.
Parkside Drive is a circular thoroughfare that runs around Marsden Park, a very popular outdoor area for Park Central residents, workers and visitors.
“This has been happening at night, there’s drugs, they throw rocks, it’s a serious problem, a real concern for the residents and we need to do something about it,’’ Cr Borg told the council.
The area where the crime and anti social behaviour occurs is isolated and very dark.
Cr Borg wants the council to act urgently, starting with a site inspection early in the new year to help identify possible solutions and working with local police.
He also wants council to consider closing off the laneway between Park Central and the Ambarvale sporting fields.
Cr Borg won support for an inspection in February with possible further action to follow after that.
