Domestic violence never, ever acceptable

Awareness campaign: Greg Warren this week with members of Campbelltown’s White Ribbon Convoy at Claymore Community Centre.

In Campbelltown in 2013 there were 960 domestic violence incidents – twice the average of all local government areas in NSW.

This is a horrifying and unacceptable statistic, says the State Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren.

Domestic violence is never acceptable. Everybody deserves to feel safe and secure in their own home and those who commit domestic violence must be held to account for their actions, the MP said this week after taking part in local White Ribbon events.

For more than a decade White Ribbon Australia has campaigned with men to end violence against women.

Education, advocacy and public awareness is crucial to ending the violence.

White Ribbon has played an integral role in raising community awareness on this issue.

Reducing domestic violence and sexual assault is one of the most important issues facing our society.

It must be a top priority for all governments and tackled in a bipartisan way that engages the whole community, Mr Warren said.

In addition to existing support measures for victims of domestic violence, Mr Warren is calling on the government to:

• Introduce a dedicated Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Court to streamline the criminal justice system for victims of domestic violence; and

• More resources and a greater focus on the provision of women and children only refuges to support those fleeing violence at home.

Mr Warren showed his support for the cause by attending the White Ribbon Convoy throughout the Campbelltown area, culminating in a ceremony at Mawson Park

“We need to work together to make sure everyone is safe and that violence against women is stamped out,’’ the MP said.

“Campbelltown women and men have said enough is enough and will stand united to stop violence against women in our community.

“As a husband and father I know that every man has a responsibility to be a role model to their children and their communities.”
