Time to check the crystal ball to see where 2026 will land

Well, here we are now, on the last day of 2025. For many of us December 31 is a day of reflection, and of contemplation of the year ahead.

One thing that we know for sure will happen in 2026 is the opening of the Western Sydney International Airport or WSI as anyone who uses it will come to know it as.

It will be just about 50 years since the launch of the Major Airport Needs od Sydney (MANS) studies, which looked at the best location, impact on communities and so on.

The Badgerys Creek site was always nominated as the best of the lot, so it’s no surprise authorities have gone that way.

In the late 1990s the Howard Government seriously considered Holsworthy as the site for a second airport, and when you think about it, it made some sense.

Such an airport would have been a short distance to the M5 as well the railway line that runs from Campbelltown to the City via Glenfield and East Hills.

Unfortunately, when the flight paths were revealed, they showed mighty jetliners flying low over Campbelltown’s main street, and eventually the idea was abandoned.

Football, or soccer if you prefer, will dominate the sporting world in 2026, with the mighty Matildas and the Socceroos to feature in the Asian Cup and the FIFA World Cup respectively.

For long suffering Wests Tigers fans, it will be another season where we have our fingers crossed Benji Marshall can muster a little bit of success.

It’s long overdue.

Cost of living will no doubt continue to cast a shadow over all of us as we continue to try to make ends meet at a time where substantial price increases have become the norm.

Maybe 2026 can be a turning point in this area, who knows?

We got our crystal ball out to see what may be the five biggest moments of 2026, and here they are:

Number 1. The Matildas become Asian champions.

Number 2. The Socceroos progress to the quarter finals of the World Cup for the first time.

Number 3. WSI opens and is a big success.

Number 4. The cost of living takes a small break from constantly going up.

Number 5. Wests Tigers make the NRL finals.
