You’ll learn a lot of history via a guided tour of a local cemetery.

Celebrate Campbelltown’s extraordinary past with a walking tour of a local cemetery or revisit historic Queen Street through a photographic display at HJ Daley Library.

It’s all part of the 2016 National Trust Heritage Festival, which starts from this Saturday, April 16 and continues until May 29.

Discovery and Rediscoveries is this year’s theme, and Campbelltown City Council is encouraging residents to rediscover their region and learn something new about their past.

A number of history themed community events are planned.

Take a guided walk through St David’s Presbyterian Cemetery on May 4 or the Methodist Congregational Cemetery on May 12, and be amazed as local historians recount fascinating facts and quirky stories about Campbelltown’s most famous former citizens.

Both tours run from 11am to noon and are free, but bookings are essential on 4645 4436.

Or re-live the past and take a nostalgic stroll down the Queen Street of days gone by, as HJ Daley Library presents the history of Campbelltown’s main street in a photographic display, highlighting businesses from the town’s past.

Rediscover Queen Street will be on display at HJ Daley Library for a month, April 26 to May 26.

As a precursor to this year’s Heritage Festival, the Campbelltown Arts Centre is hosting the annual Heritage Forum today (April 13) at 6.30pm.

It will be followed by the presentation of the 2016 Campbelltown Heritage Medallion, a biennial event which acknowledges an individual or group

from the local community, who through their day-to-day work and actions, promote, preserve, and celebrate not only the past heritage of our community, but the role it plays in shaping our present and future endeavours.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Hawker, said the National Trust Heritage Festival was a great opportunity for residents to celebrate the people and places that have helped shape Campbelltown’s heritage.

[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“It’s the chance to hear some extraordinary stories from our past, explore some of the city’s more unusual destinations and discover the cultural heritage right here in own backyard,” Cr Hawker said.[/social_quote]

“Council is keen to promote our unique heritage through local events, and assist residents to learn more about the region’s history.

“By sharing stories and information, we ensure our unique history will be preserved for generations to come,” Cr Hawker said.
