An Aboriginal cultural space called Yarning Circle will be built at Koshigaya Park as part of the Campbelltown 2020 program.
Yarning Circles come in different designs and sizes, so Campbelltown Council is inviting residents to contribute to the design process.
Residents have until June 30 to have their say.
A Yarning Circle is a cultural space where people can sit down together and share stories, learn as a collective group, build respectful relationships and preserve and pass on cultural knowledge.
They are also meeting places for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to come together and talk about social issues or just have a yarn.
“Aboriginal people have lived in our region for more than 60,000 years, sharing stories and passing on their knowledge across generations,” says Mayor George Brticevic.
“Campbelltown 2020 acknowledges all our shared histories and the Yarning Circle represents our commitment to supporting and sharing Aboriginal culture within the public setting of our city,” Cr Brticevic said.
“This will be an important cultural space in the heart of Campbelltown that will not only pay respect to our First Peoples but also foster greater understanding and help us continue moving towards reconciliation,” he said.
It is expected construction on the Yarning Circle will be complete by November.
The project is jointly funded by Campbelltown Council and from the State Government’s Stronger Communities Fund.
