The incredibly successful Macarthur Rams women’s first grade football side has another trophy for their cabinet after being named elite sports team of the year at the 24th Annual Wests Sports Council Awards.
This talented group of women won the National Premier Leagues premiership before going on to also win the grand final CommBank Stadium earlier this year.
This was their third grand final victory in a row.
The 2024 Wests Sports Council awards, presented on Monday night, recognise outstanding contributions to grassroots sport, sporting achievements and sporting spirit.
The other winners included elite sports person of the year Natalie Van Coevorden, from the Macarthur Triathlon Club, pictured.
It has been a huge year for Van Coevorden, winning selection for the Australian Olympic team for Paris 2024.
Van Coevorden finished 42nd in the individual race, her progress hampered by being caught behind a crash that saw her lose touch with the main chase group during the bike leg.
She stayed on to race the following week as part of the Australian triathlon mixed relay team, which finished in 12th place.
Kauri Twentyman, of Eschol Park Little Athletics, was named junior sportsperson of the year at the Wests awards. Runner up was Harrison Caulfield, from the Magpies Cricket Club.
The youth sportsperson of the year award went to Isla Basa, of Macarthur BMX. Runner up was Ana Scott Jokatama, from the Campbelltown Harlequins Rugby Club.
Senior sportsperson of the year was Robert Picken, of the Macarthur Triathlon Club.
Picken had an amazing season with a long list of first places in his age category of 70-74 years, including the Nepean triathlon and sprint triathlon, Australian Standard Distance Triathlon Championship, the NSW Long Distance Triathlon Championship and also at the Duathlon Championships.
Picken also finished first in his age category at the Ironman Australia 2024.
Runner up senior sportsperson of the year at the Wests awards was Sally Fuesaina, Campbelltown Harlequins.
Sports club team of the year was the Camden Rams rugby league first grade side, who won this year’s Macarthur Conference premiership. Runner up sports club team of the year was the Campbelltown City Kangaroos U18 girls.
Match official of the year was Matthew Galvin, of Group 6 Rugby League Referees Association, pictured above.
Spirit of Sport: the winner was Colin Rose, Tennis Macarthur, with the runner up Caitlin Wright, of Camden & District Netball Association.
