Work on major upgrades to the Camden Valley Way and Liz Kernohan Drive begin this month. Once complete, there will be better traffic flow, safety, and connectivity across Elderslie, Kirkham and Spring Farm.
As part of the upgrades, Liz Kernohan Drive will be extended from Rheinbergers Circuit to Camden Valley Way and it will be re-surfaced from Rheinbergers Circuit to Grimes Avenue.
A new four way signalised intersection will be installed at Kirkham Lane and the new Liz Kernhan Drive connection to Camden Valley Way, while a large culvert will be installed near Grimes Avenue.
Liz Kernohan Drive at Knight Street will be connected to Liz Kernohan Drive at Grimes Avenue. This connection will be delivered simultaneously as part of a private development.
Liz Kernohan Drive, from Knight Street to Lodges Road will be upgraded to include one travel lane in each direction, a landscaped median and parallel parking on both sides.
These works will complete the east-west link between Camden Valley Way and Camden Bypass, offering an alternative to Hilder Street and Richardson Road.
The intersection of Hilder Street and Camden Valley Way will be upgraded to a two-lane roundabout (computer generated image is above).
Camden Valley Way, between Kirkham Lane and Hilder Street, will be widened to two lanes in each direction and raised to reduce flood risk and improve safety.
This $32.7 million project has received $14.9 million in funding from the NSW Government’s Western Sydney infrastructure grants, $6.4 million from the Federal Government’s Western Sydney infrastructure plan, and $11.4 million from Camden Council’s local developer contributions.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, says the project would have numerous benefits for the Camden community.
“These works will improve road capacity and safety, provide more reliable travel time, access and connectivity and also provide upgrades to footpath and cycleways,” she said.
“The project will also see a number of new trees planted. Council worked through a number of design constraints, including the BMX facility, sports fields, private properties, utilities, drainage and existing vegetation, and determined the road’s centre line must remain to balance impacts on either side. As a result, 99 trees will need to be removed to deliver the project.
“Council will replant 398 trees including 96 liquidambars on both sides of Camden Valley Way from Kirkham Lane extending past Hilder Street to create an avenue of liquidambars when entering from Narellan to Camden.
“Council truly appreciates the community’s understanding as we deliver this important infrastructure. I can’t wait to see this project delivered.”
As works begin, Camden Valley Way will be the first area impacted, with changes to traffic conditions and potential delays.
Council says it will maintain two-way traffic at all times and schedule any necessary road closures at night to minimise disruption.
