Truck driver charged over Hume Highway crash

Police have charged a man with driving offences following a crash near Mittagong on Monday.

Officers attached to The Hume Police District had closed one southbound lane at Braemar, north of Mittagong, about 11.15am while a single vehicle crash was being cleared. There were no injuries.

About 45 minutes later, while police were still diverting traffic from the blocked lane, a second crash occurred involving a heavy vehicle and a hatchback. The hatchback was then forced into the rear of a station-wagon.

A front-seat passenger in the hatchback, a 69-year-old woman, was trapped within the wreckage for some time before being released and airlifted to Liverpool Hospital.

Police say she suffered multiple injuries including fractures.

The man driving the hatchback, also aged 69, was also taken to Liverpool Hospital, by road ambulance, to be treated for cuts, as well as undergoing mandatory testing.

The driver of the truck, a 55-year-old man, was not injured; he was arrested and taken to Bowral Hospital for mandatory testing before being taken to Southern Highlands police station.

Officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the incident.

The driver was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, cause bodily harm by misconduct in charge of motor vehicle and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

He was granted conditional bail to appear before Moss Vale Local Court on April 16.

Police are appealing for public assistance to locate this man (pictured at right) who missing from the Macquarie Fields area.

Darren Banks, age 57, was last seen at a home on Maple Place, Macquarie Fields, about 4pm last Friday (March 15).

Unable to be located or contacted since, Darren was reported missing to officers attached to Campbelltown City Police Area Command on Tuesday (March 20, who commenced inquires to locate him.

Police hold serious concerns for Darrens’ welfare.

Darren is described as being of Caucasian appearance, of medium build, approximately 180cm tall, with short brown hair and beard with brown eyes.

Police believe Darren may be travelling in a White Toyota Camry 2004 with black roof racks and NSW registration ECR-17S.

Darren is known to frequent bush walks in Sutherland, Southern Highlands, Wollongong, and Campbelltown areas.
