The Basin, a popular water hole on the Georges River at Kentlyn, claimed the life of a swimmer who jumped in off a rock yesterday.

With temperatures hovering just under 40 degrees Celsius, many locals headed to the Basin, which is accessed via a short walk through the Keith Longhurst Reserve at the end of Georges River Road, where council parking is provided.

But the day ended in tragedy when a man who jumped off one of the large rocks on the western end of the Basin failed to resurface.

Witnesses told the authorities the man was with a young relative when he jumped in around 3.40pm.

Emergency services were called to the scene and his body was eventually found by police divers more than three hours later at 7pm.

The search for the man involved local police, SES members and officers attached to the Police Dive Unit.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
