Camden Council is calling on local organisations to turn recycling and surplus food into big community wins at this year’s Taste Camden.
There are two key sustainability focused initiatives being served up as part of this year’s food event, and expressions of interest (EOIs) are now open for local community groups and charities.
The first is the Return and Earn community partnership. This initiative offers a creative way for community groups, schools, sporting clubs or charities to fundraise while supporting environmental sustainability.
Participating groups will operate beverage container collection points at the event, collect eligible containers and redeem them through the Return and Earn scheme and keep all funds raised.
The second initiative is the surplus food donation program and expressions of interest are also being sought from organisations interested in collecting quality surplus food from the event for charitable redistribution.
Surplus food will consist of safe, high-quality items that weren’t sold by stallholders throughout the event.
The popular Taste Camden event will be held from noon to 5pm on Sunday, September 21, at Camden Town Farm.
“Taste Camden is one of council’s premier signature events and really is a focal point for council,” says Mayor of Camden Ashleigh Cagney.
“Last year we had more than 10,000 attendees who came to experience more than 70 food vendors, live music, local products and a celebrity chef demonstration.
“It is always an incredible day and it’s amazing to see so many people enjoy themselves.
“This year is promising to be even more exciting. Council staff are working hard on putting the finishing touches on the event. I can’t wait to share more soon!
“Not only does this event give our residents and visitors the unique opportunity to try something different and enjoy a day like no other, it also provides a unique opportunity to rescue unused food and support local charities.
“I’m incredibly proud of both these initiatives and strongly encourage our local community groups and charities to submit an expression of interest. We can’t wait to work with you.”
EOIs for these two initiatives close at the end of the month.
