The South West Sydney Orchestra’s mid-year concert will feature collaborative pieces with the senior strings ensemble of Macarthur Anglican School.
Titled Enchanted orchestra – where music meets magic, the concert by these talented local musicians will be held at the school on Sunday, June 22 (see concert snapshot at bottom of the story).
The South West Sydney Orchestra (SWSO) was originally the Fisher’s Ghost Youth Orchestra and was founded in 1987.
“The name change reflects our growth as we have gone from one children’s orchestra into two string ensembles, one band ensemble, and a training orchestra,’’ says a spokesperson of SWSO.
The ensembles cater for a wide range of playing abilities and ages, ranging from primary school students, through to university students, with passionate adult mentors providing musical and leadership guidance to up and coming stars of the future.
The focus at SWSO is primarily for school age students of the area learning an orchestral instrument and to give them the training and opportunity to play with other like-minded people and teach them the skills needed to play various styles of music in an orchestra without having to travel outside the area.
“We also offer introductory classes each term, taught by a music teacher, giving learners a short term experience before they commit,’’ says the Orchestra spokesperson.
“If there are enough proficient adult musicians in the area then an adult orchestra could also be provided – this would then give the more advanced school students a pathway for continued advancement in the local area.
“We hold two formal concerts a year, but this year we have three.
“We aim to provide our musicians with a variety of performance opportunities, including busking at Christmas markets, Bunnings sausage sizzle fundraisers, local community events such as the Camden Show, and as guest performers at other local community concerts.’’
